Family reunification (spouse, child, parent 67+)

Family members of Icelandic citizens or residence-permit holders can apply for a family-reunification residence permit. EEA/EFTA sponsors' family members use a separate residence card.

Requirements

  • Sponsor holds a permit carrying reunification rights (or is an Icelandic citizen)
  • Documented family relationship
  • Spouse permits issued 1 year at a time, max 2 years, not exceeding the sponsor's permit
  • Holder must not be abroad more than 3 consecutive months
  • If the sponsor is EEA/EFTA, apply for an EEA family-member residence card instead

  • Bank-transfer payment receipt required
  • General supporting documents (passport copy, photo, criminal record, health insurance) required
  • Marriage/cohabitation or birth certificate evidencing the relationship required

  • Spouse/cohabiting partner 110,000 ISK
  • Child 60,000 ISK
  • Parent aged 67+ 110,000 ISK
  • Refugee spouse 90,000 ISK
  • EEA/EFTA family-member residence card 8,000 ISK

    Confirm the sponsor has a permit carrying reunification rights.

    Assemble documents

    Assemble general plus spouse/child supporting documents.

    Pay the fee

    Pay the applicable fee by bank transfer (non-refundable).

    Submit on paper

    Submit on paper to Utlendingastofnun.

    Await decision

    Await the decision.

  6. 6

    Register domicile

    On approval, register domicile to obtain a kennitala.
