Trainee / Intern Permit (D/AM — Trainee Worker)

Non-EU nationals holding a higher education diploma who participate in an internship or vocational improvement program with a Romanian company may obtain a dedicated trainee work authorisation. This is a distinct permit category listed on the IGI employment and posting page, separate from the standard employed worker single permit.

Requirements

  • Higher education diploma from a third country
  • Participation in a recognised vocational improvement, qualification, language, or cultural internship program
  • Valid individual fixed-term employment/internship contract with a Romanian company
  • Romanian employer must have been operating for at least 1 year
  • Employer must not have had undeclared work or illegal employment violations in the prior 6 months
  • Clean criminal record
  • Medical certificate confirming ability to perform duties
  • Valid passport
  • Proof of accommodation in Romania
  • Medical insurance covering at least 30,000 EUR

Process Steps

  1. 1

    Employer obtains trainee work authorisation from IGI

    The Romanian host company applies at the territorial IGI bureau for a trainee work authorisation, paying the equivalent of 100 EUR in RON. IGI processes within 30 days (extendable by 15 days).

  2. 2

    Applicant applies for D-type long-stay visa

    With the work authorisation, the trainee applies at the Romanian embassy/consulate in their country of residence for a D-type long-stay visa, paying the 300 EUR visa fee.

  3. 3

    Enter Romania and apply for temporary residence permit

    After entering Romania, the trainee applies at the territorial IGI bureau for a temporary residence permit, presenting the work authorisation, visa, and supporting documents.
