Citizenship / Naturalization in United Arab Emirates

One documented route of this kind in United Arab Emirates, with its conditions, documents, official government fees and process.

Emirati Citizenship by Naturalisation (Government Nomination Only)

There is no ordinary residence-based route to UAE citizenship. Since the 2021 nationality-law amendments, naturalisation is granted only by government nomination to exceptional investors, scientists, doctors, talents and intellectuals; it is not realistically attainable for typical migrants.

Processing time
Indeterminate; nomination-driven
Validity
Lifelong citizenship if granted (revocable under defined conditions)
Language requirement
No language certificate needed
Citizenship
No fixed timeline; granted only by government nomination, not by residence duration

Requirements

  • Belong to a nominated category: investor, doctor/specialist, scientist, inventor/talent, or intellectual/creative
  • Meet category-specific conditions (e.g. property ownership; 10+ years' experience; registered patents; international awards)
  • Be nominated by UAE Federal or local authorities (no direct application)
  • Swear the oath of allegiance and commit to abide by UAE law

Required Documents

  • Evidence supporting the nominated category (property, qualifications, patents, awards) required
  • Valid passport and personal documents required
  • Nomination/approval from competent UAE authority required

Process Steps

  1. 1

    Identification/nomination

A UAE Federal or local authority identifies and nominates an eligible individual; there is no public application channel.

  2. 2

    Verification of category conditions

Authorities verify the category-specific requirements (investment, expertise, patents, awards).

  3. 3

    Approval and oath

Upon approval, the individual swears the oath of allegiance before citizenship is granted.
