Self-Employed / Freelance Residence Permit
Non-EU nationals who wish to work as self-employed or freelance in Bulgaria must first obtain a self-employment permit from the Employment Agency, then a Type D visa, and finally a residence permit from the Migration Directorate. The applicant must demonstrate at least 2 years of professional experience in the relevant field and hold a B1 Bulgarian language certificate. The permit is valid for up to 1 year and is renewable up to a total of 3 years.

- Validity
- Up to 1 year, renewable; maximum 3 years total. After 3 years, applicant must return to home country for at least 1 month before reapplying.

Apply for self-employment permit at Employment Agency
Submit an application to Bulgaria's Employment Agency including an activity plan, professional experience documentation, B1 language certificate, education credentials, and financial resource proof. Apply for Type D visa at Bulgarian embassy
Once the self-employment permit is approved, apply for a Type D (long-stay) visa at the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in your country of nationality or legal residence. Processing takes approximately 35 working days.

Enter Bulgaria and apply for residence permit
After entering Bulgaria on the Type D visa, apply to the Migration Directorate for a residence permit. The application must be submitted before the visa expires. Processing takes up to 14 days, extendable by one month in complex cases.

Register residential address
Notify authorities of your residential address within 5 days of obtaining the residence permit.

Renewal
Submit renewal application to the Migration Directorate no later than 14 days before the current permit expires. Renewals are possible up to a total of 3 years. After 3 years, a minimum 1-month return to home country is required before reapplying.
