Citizenship by Descent and Simplified Naturalisation for Descendants / Third Generation
This pathway covers two legally distinct routes. (1) Citizenship by descent: automatic acquisition at birth where at least one parent is a Swiss citizen, or declaratory acquisition for those born before 1 July 2018 to a Swiss mother. (2) Third-generation simplified naturalisation (Swiss Citizenship Act Art. 24a): available only to applicants who were born in Switzerland, hold a C permit, attended at least 5 years of compulsory schooling in Switzerland, have a parent who is a permanent resident with at least 10 years of Swiss residence and at least 5 years of Swiss schooling, and have at least one grandparent born in Switzerland. Applications must be submitted before the applicant's 25th birthday. No fee amount is published on the official SEM page for the third-generation route.
