EU Long-Term Resident Status / Permanent Residence
Permanent residence permit (EU long-term resident status) for third-country nationals who have lawfully resided in Latvia for five continuous years.
- Processing time
- Three months (standard) for most third-country nationals after submission of all documents. Within 30 days for Latvian non-citizens. Expedited processing within 10 working days available for EUR 280.
- Validity
- Permanent (EU long-term resident status); ID card renewed periodically
- Language requirement
- Latvian language proficiency at A2 level or higher is mandatory. Applicants must present a certificate issued by the National Centre for Education confirming A2-level state language knowledge (certificate issued from 1 February 2001 onward).
- Permanent residence
- This is the permanent residence status itself, granted after 5 years of continuous lawful residence
- Citizenship
- Naturalization generally after 5+ years of permanent residence (subject to language, history, and other criteria)
