D4 Visa – Student / Study Residence Visa

Portugal's national long-stay visa for non-EU/EEA students enrolling in higher education, research programs, professional training, internships, or exchange schemes lasting more than one year. Allows part-time work during studies. After graduation, holders may convert to a work visa or apply for the job-seeker visa without leaving Portugal. Portugal actively recruits international students and the D4 is one of its most frequently issued national visas.

  • Accepted onto a bachelor's, master's, PhD, internship, research, or formal exchange programme at a recognised Portuguese institution lasting more than 1 year
  • Proof of financial means of at least €11,040 per year (equivalent to the annual national minimum wage in 2026) or equivalent monthly proof of €920
  • Clean criminal record
  • Valid comprehensive health/travel insurance
  • Proof of accommodation in Portugal
  • Valid passport (minimum 3 months validity beyond intended stay)

Process Steps

  1. 1

    Secure institutional acceptance

    Apply to and receive an official enrolment or acceptance letter from a recognised Portuguese higher education institution for a programme lasting more than 1 year.

    Compile and submit visa application

    Gather all documents and submit at the Portuguese consulate or VFS Global centre in your country. Pay the €110 national D-type visa fee.

    Attend consulate interview

    Some consulates require an in-person interview. Confirm with the consulate in your jurisdiction.

    Enter Portugal and register

    Travel to Portugal on the issued D4 visa (valid for 2 years, 2 entries). Register your address with the local municipality (junta de freguesia) within 3 days of arrival.

    Apply to AIMA for residence permit

    Within 90 days of arrival, schedule and attend an AIMA appointment to obtain a student residence permit. The permit will be valid for the duration of your studies (typically 1–2 years, renewable).

  6. 6

    Renew or convert after studies

    Renew the student permit annually or per academic year. Upon completion of studies, convert to a work residence visa (with job offer) or apply for a job-seeker visa to seek employment without departing Portugal.
