Swedish citizenship by naturalisation
Naturalisation as a Swedish citizen. From 6 June 2026, stricter rules apply: longer required residence, proof of an orderly life and self-support (income corresponding to at least three income base amounts/year, approx SEK 20,000/month before tax), and requirements for knowledge of Swedish language and society.
- Language requirement
- Knowledge of the Swedish language and Swedish society is required (rule in force from June 6, 2026). Applicants aged 16–66 must demonstrate this knowledge. A formal language and civics test is being developed; until the test is available, Migrationsverket will assess language and society knowledge through other means.
- Citizenship
- Standard requirement: at least 8 years of continuous habitual residence in Sweden (rule in force from June 6, 2026, increased from 5 years). Reduced periods apply: 7 years for spouses/registered partners of Swedish citizens, refugees, and applicants under 21; 5 years for stateless persons; 2 years for Nordic citizens and those who have previously held Swedish citizenship.
