Employment (Single Permit / Work Permit + Type D visa)

Non-EU nationals employed by a Bulgarian employer obtain a single permit (combined work and residence authorisation) or a work permit, after the employer demonstrates a labour market test, then a Type D visa and residence permit.

Process Steps

  1. 1

    Employer applies for approval

    Employer files for single/work permit approval at the local Employment Agency office, evidencing the labour market test.

  2. 2

    Apply for Type D visa

    After approval, the worker applies for a Type D long-stay visa at a Bulgarian embassy or consulate abroad.

  3. 3

    Enter Bulgaria and finalise permit

    After arrival, apply at the Migration Directorate of the Ministry of Interior for the single permit / residence permit.

  4. 4

    Register and renew

    Register your address; renew the permit annually up to three years; after five years of legal residence, apply for long-term residence.
