United Arab Emirates
The UAE operates a sponsorship-based residence system layered into short-term work/family permits and long-term self-sponsored tiers. Most expatriates hold renewable employment residence visas (1-3 years) tied to an employer, or family-sponsored visas, while business owners obtain investor/partner residence via a trade licence. Long-term options include the 5-year Green Visa (skilled workers, freelancers, investors), the 5/10-year Golden Visa (investors, talents, top professionals earning AED 50,000+, scientists, outstanding students), retirement and remote-work/virtual-working visas. The UAE has no conventional permanent residence; the Golden Visa is the closest equivalent (indefinitely renewable long-term residency). Naturalisation as an Emirati citizen is extremely rare and not generally attainable for migrants -- since 2021 it exists only by government nomination for exceptional investors, scientists and talents, and there is no ordinary residence-based path to citizenship.
